CHAPTER SEVEN

ANOTHER SHIP

Taylor had overslept again. When he packed his backpack, he was in a hurry to catch the bus. He forgot his math homework when he packed his backpack. When Arlo and Evan turned in what he had given them, they got a ninety-five while he got a zero.

Something worse happened after school. He was behind the building giving Arlo and Evan the day's assignment. Suddenly Julie came around the corner.

"I've been wondering what you were doing back here every day."

Arlo glared at her. "If you know anything, you better not tell. Your boyfriend wrote a story about you that Miss Giles would love to read."

He brushed past her and Evan followed.

Julie stared at Taylor.

He felt his face growing red. "It's not really about you. You're just in it."

"Why are you giving them homework? Is it because of that story?"

"Yes. I don't want Miss Giles to see the story."

"But you're giving that horrible Arlo homework. You can't do that. He already cheats on tests. I saw him look at Arthur's answers yesterday."

"I can't help it. I really don't want Miss Giles to see that story. Please don't tell her what's going on."

Julie sighed. "I won't tell. But there has to be a way to get out of this."

"I've been trying to think of one."

"Maybe if you get something on Arlo, you could blackmail him. Then, he'd have to give back the story."

"I thought of that, but I don't have anything yet."

"I'll help. We'll both watch him. He's bound to do something really bad."

"Thanks. Maybe he'll rob a bank or something."

Julie giggled. "I bet he would."

She bit her lip, studying Taylor. "I didn't know you wrote stories. Maybe I could read one sometime."

Taylor felt his face flush again. "Maybe sometime. I've never let anyone read my stories, except when I have to do one for school."

"If I help you with Arlo, you have to let me read one. Deal?"

Taylor swallowed hard. He had not meant to share this part of himself with anyone. But he did want Julie's help. Maybe he could give it to her at the end of the school year. Then he could hide out all summer.

"Deal," he agreed. "I better go catch the bus."

He went home and tried to forget about Arlo and about his promise to Julie. He flipped on his computer and got back to Kip.

Kip remained on the island a few more days to get back his strength. The natives invited him to stay, but he was anxious to be off.

It was time to start home. He missed his parents and his village. He even missed the tongue-lashing he knew he'd get for climbing the wall.

Muno's family came to see him off.

Muno held out the musket. "Are you sure you will not need this?"

Kip shook his head. "You keep it. Keep the powder dry and use it only when you must."

Muno nodded. "It will have a place of honor. Our children will pass the story of how it came to be here. You will not be forgotten.
